Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: TDIH: Jack Straw in Witchita

Hey Wichita Clem
I work with a lady who was at the show,I was only 8 at the time, but she said it was really good.Teased her this morning about what she may have said 41 years ago this morning,"What the hell was that last night?Unreal!","God,I've got to come down,it's already 7 a.m",or my fave,"Crap!!I'm STILL dosed!!!!!!"
It is sad that the only "Jack Straw" played in Wichita suffers from the nasty cut,the rest of the show (tapes from Dick),has a few bugs. The drop out in "Tenessee Jed",and the splices in "Casey Jones" and during "The Other One" jam.Other than that, this is a really cool show,a show I never traded out,out of respect for the late Mr.Latvala.I asked about the tape in '97,via a letter/order.The order was for the Allman Brothers Fillmore East '70 disc that GDP put out.I just mentioned that the Allmans were the first live show I saw in '75,at the age of 11,then the Dead a few years later. Both bands mean the world to me,and always will.I just told Dick that I had been looking for any lead on the Wichita show,I've lived here almost all my life, and still do.I had never seen it on tapers lists in the 14 years of trading up to that point.I thought at best I'd get an address for someone that Dick may know,at worst, nothing. Two weeks later,an envelope shows up in my mailbox, and the return was from Novato,CA,but it wasn't waht they would send an order in.I opened it,and two TDK-SAX 100 minute tapes came out and a note.Dick thanked me for the love of this music, and just sent copies off the reels. He asked that I don't put this out,so I didn't.But I knew how Dick 'slipped'things out via piggy back copies.Five analog and five DAT tapes would go out, suddenly I was getting lists with this on it,DATs no less, but I traded analog only at the time.So this is my fault,(I say with a smile),that someone digitized it,and put it up here.
After Dick passed,I did make one copy for Kirk West, the Allman Brothers archivist. He and Dick met a few years before Dick died, and I figured that Dick wouldn't have minded that I got one to his kindred spirit. When I told Kirk how I got this and the meaning of it all,he shed a few tears, gave me hug,my pass from Derek, and said,"Let's go get a hot show, brother!"The ABB kicked ass again that night in 2004,major ass.
In all glad the show is out and people enjoy.I know I sure do.And thanks Dick
